Canada at Eurovision 2027: Selection, Semi-Final and Odds
TL;DR: Canada debuts at Eurovision 2027 in Burgas, the first new country since Australia in 2015. CBC/Radio-Canada is picking an artist first, without a televised national final, and the song has to mix English and French. Canada goes through a semi-final. No bookmaker prices Canada to win yet, and the honest first target is qualification.

How Canada got in
CBC/Radio-Canada has been an associate member of the EBU since 1950. That status doesn't allow a country to compete. At its June 2026 General Assembly in Prague, the EBU changed its statutes so broadcasters from countries with Council of Europe observer status can become full members. Canada has that status, and CBC/Radio-Canada was admitted on 25 June.
That makes Canada different from Australia. SBS is still an associate member and competes by invitation, renewed each year. Canada competes by right. Source: EBU announcement.
The groundwork was there. The November 2025 federal budget already mentioned exploring participation, and in 2026 Canada was among the top three countries in the "Rest of the World" vote. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the entry on Canada Day himself, calling Eurovision "the most gloriously over-the-top celebration of music on Earth."
An earlier route didn't work out. Eurovision Canada, a national-final format announced by Insight Productions in April 2022, stalled; CBC later called it "prohibitively expensive."
How CBC/Radio-Canada is picking the artist
Full membership came too late in June to run a national final for 2027. The process instead:
1. Applications ran from 31 August to 9 September 2026. Open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents aged 18 or over by 1 May 2027.
2. A shortlist chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada to reflect "Canada's musical diversity."
3. A vote combining an online public vote and a music-industry jury. The weighting hasn't been published.
4. The song is written afterwards, with the chosen artist, a creative director and an industry team.
According to a media invitation reported by fan press, the finalists are due to be revealed on Tuesday 27 October 2026 in Toronto. CBC/Radio-Canada hasn't confirmed that publicly. Source: CBC media centre.
A televised selection show is "not off the table" for later years.
Who's in the conversation
bbno$ said on stage that he would put himself forward, and CBC's Jennifer Dettman has called him "a contender."
Rêve (Montreal) and TALK (Ottawa) have said publicly they want to go.
Social media keeps naming Carly Rae Jepsen, Alessia Cara, Charlotte Cardin and Faouzia. None has said anything about applying.
Until the shortlist is out, all of this is noise.
English and French: a constraint that could help
The song must contain both official languages. The artist doesn't need to be bilingual; collaborators are allowed, and CBC says it will write around the artist's comfort level in each language.
French has a strong Eurovision record, and part of that record is Canadian:
| Artist | Represented | Year | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Céline Dion | Switzerland | 1988 | 1st |
| Lara Fabian | Luxembourg | 1988 | 4th |
| Sherisse Laurence | Luxembourg | 1986 | 3rd |
| Annie Cotton | Switzerland | 1993 | 3rd |
| Natasha St-Pier | France | 2001 | 4th |
La Zarra (France 2023) and Katerine Duska (Greece 2019) also have Canadian roots. So Canada has already won Eurovision — just not under its own flag.
The Australia precedent
Australia is the only real comparison. It debuted in 2015 with a free pass to the final, which Canada doesn't get.
| Year | Australia's result |
|---|---|
| 2015 | 5th (debut, straight to final) |
| 2016 | 2nd |
| 2017 | 9th |
| 2018 | 20th |
| 2019 | 9th |
| 2021 | Did not qualify |
| 2022 | 15th |
| 2023 | 9th |
| 2024 | Did not qualify |
| 2025 | Did not qualify |
| 2026 | 4th |
Two lessons. A well-funded debutant can aim high from the start. And without neighbours, semi-finals are a real risk: Australia missed three of the last five finals.
What the odds say (and don't)
There are no winner odds for Canada yet. Eurovision 2027 outright markets barely exist before national selections run between December and March. Prediction markets only price whether Canada appears on the official participant list, and they treat that as close to certain.
Our read, before the artist is known:
The televote is a structural headwind. Canada has no Eurovision neighbours. Diaspora votes help; there is no regional bloc.
The jury is the opportunity. A well-produced bilingual song is jury material, and juries have long rewarded French.
Canadian votes don't help Canada. Like every competing country, Canada can't vote for itself. Its large "Rest of the World" contribution in recent years goes into its own national televote instead.
The realistic first benchmark is the final. Qualifying on a debut without a national final would be a good result.
Markets will open properly once the artist and song are known. We'll track them on our Eurovision odds page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can Canada take part in Eurovision?
Because CBC/Radio-Canada became a full EBU member on 25 June 2026. A rule change lets broadcasters from Council of Europe observer states — Canada is one — become full members. Unlike Australia, Canada does not need an invitation.
How is Canada choosing its Eurovision artist?
There is no televised national final for 2027. CBC/Radio-Canada took applications from 31 August to 9 September 2026, is drawing up a shortlist, and will combine an online public vote with a music-industry jury. The song is developed after the artist is chosen.
Will Canada's Eurovision song be in French?
Partly. CBC/Radio-Canada's rules require the song to include both English and French. The artist doesn't have to be bilingual and can bring in collaborators.
Does Canada qualify automatically for the final?
No. Canada has to come through a semi-final (11 or 13 May 2027). Only host Bulgaria and the participating Big Five countries go straight to the final.
What time is Eurovision 2027 in Canada?
If the shows start at 21:00 Central European time as usual, that is 15:00 in Toronto and Montreal and 12:00 in Vancouver. The semi-finals fall on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, the final on Saturday 15 May.
